Illidan Stormrage, brother of Malfurion, was one of Queen Azshara's high-borne that became addicted to the magic of the Well of Eternity. Illidan also shared a love for Tyrande Whisperwind with his brother, however his emotions were never returned by Tyrande, who only loved Furion. Durring the War of the Ancients, Furion managed to convince his brother to forsake the corrupting magics and help him fight the Burning Legion. With Tyrande's patient support, Illidan was able to resist the addiction for a time and the trio was able to find the reculsive demi-god Cenarius.

With the help of Cenarius and Alexstraza and their respective forces, Furion planned an assualt on Queen Azshara and the Well of Eternity itself, believing that if it were destroyed, then the Legion's portal to the world would be closed. Illidan however could not bare the idea of losing the magic stemming from the Well and betrayed his brother, informing Azshara of the planned attack.

During the battle that ensued, Illidan filled a few specially crafted vials with some of the Well's water so that he may always have the power of magic. After the sundering of the continent, Illidan escaped to Mount Hyjal long before the other survivors and poured the contents of the vials into the mountain lake. This effectively created a new Well of Eternity, and while Illidan believed this to be his gift to the world, Furion believed it to be a potential catastrophe. When Furion finally came upon Illidan he decided that the only way to deal with his power crazed brother was to lock him beneath the ground in an underground vault.

Here Illidan stayed for ten-thousand long years under the watchful eye of Maiev Shadowsong the warden. However during the third demonic invasion, Tyrande and Furion came upon his prison while in search of the Druids of the Claw. Despire Furion's protests Tyrande entered the prison and, slaying the Warden's guards, freed Illidan.

Illidan, in an attempt to help his race, attempted to assualt Tichondrius the dreadlord's base. Before the attack could commence however, Prince Arthas, the undead Death Knight came from the shadows to inform Illidan that if he could capture the Skull of Gul'dan and use it as his own, not only would he stop the agent the Legion was using to corrupt the Night Elves' land, but he would also become imbued with such power that defeating Tichondrius would be a simple task. Illidan, heeding the Death Knight's advice, first captured the Skull, ingesting its power and thus becoming being that was neither demon nor night elf, but something more.

With his new powers Illidan was able to destroy the dreadlord however immediately afterward was approached by his brother and Tyrande. Furion, unable to understand his brother's sacrifice, banished him from the Night Elf lands forever. Dissappointed that his brother could not comprehend how his sacrifice had helped his race, Illidan stormed off.

Shortly after Archimonde's defeat at Mount Hyjal, Illidan was visited by one of the last powerful Demonlords, Kil'jaeden. Despite the fact that Illidan's destruction of the Skull of Gul'dan sealed the doom of the Burning Legion's invasion, Kil'jaeden was willing to give Illidan a chance to serve him. He informed Illidan that his pawn the Lich King had once more broken the pact between them and for that, should be killed. Illidan agreed to serve Kil'jaeden and was promised his heart's desire should he accomplish the task.

Illidan made for the coast where he raised creatures that had been burried beneath the ocean for thousands of years. He raised the race known as the Naga, who were actually the transformed high-borne elves that had been crushed beneath the waters during the sundering and the implosion of the Well of Eternity. The Naga became the perfect servants for Illidan for their hatred of the Night Elves was as immense as Illidan's own.

Commanding these new forces Illidan sailed to the Broken Isles, home of the long since destroyed Night Elf city Suramar, as well as the Tomb of Sargeras. Along with obtaining new power from the Skull of Gul'dan, Illidan also received all of Gul'dan's memories, thus he knew where the Tomb was located. Illidan hoped to enter the tomb and find the Eye of Sargeras, an artifact that would give Illidan enough power to irradicate his enemies. However, Maiev, the warden that had kept watch over him for so many years, was in close persuit.

Illidan, making his way throught the tomb eventually came upon the Eye. However, Maiev also was able to make her way to the Eye and confronted Illidan in the main chamber. Illidan however, brought down the walls and cielings of the tomb upon Maiev and her forces, and while Maiev was able to escape, the rest of her forces were destroyed. Illidan's forces continued their chase of Maiev and attempted to kill her and her forces before Furion Stormrage and reinforcements could be summoned. While they did substantial damage to Maiev's forces, they could not stop the runner and soon Furion, Tyrande, and a fighting force arrived.

The Night Elf forces were again able to drive off Illidan and the Naga, however Illidan evaded capture once more and this time sailed further east to the shores of Lordaeron. Once on the shores, Illidan made his way to the ruins of the city of Dalaran. Upon his arrival he promtly started a spell, using the Eye of Sargeras, that would split open the very grounds of Northrend and undo the enemies of his master. He of course, was trying to reveal the Frozen Throne and Ner'zhul inside of it, and if the spell had been completed he would have completely destroyed Icecrown Glacier. However, Furion, Maiev, Kael and their armies arrived before he could finish the incantations and thus the Throne was only pushed to the surface. Still, Illidan and his armies could march on the Throne and destroy Ner'zhul if they chose to.

After being stopped by Furion and his cohorts, Maiev sentenced Illidan to death. Before Maiev could execute him however, Illidan learned of Tyrande's disappearance down river. Begging his brother for a chance to help save Tyrande, Furion agreed, much to Maiev's chagrin. Illidan used his Naga to destroy the Undead encampments surrouding Tyrande's location and brought her back to safety himself. Afterwards he asked that there finally be peace between he and his brother. Furion agreed that it was time for peace, and let Illidan go his own way. Illidan, knowing that his failure to kill Ner'zhul and his aid to the Night Elves was a betrayal of his pact with Kil'jaeden, quickly fled the world of Azeroth for what was left of the broken world of Draenor now known only as Outland.

Once in Outland however, Illidan was quickly found by Maiev and her Watchers, who were able to follow him through the portal he opened. While escorting Illidan, unconscious in a cage, back to her base, Maiev and her forces were assualted by Lady Vashj and Prince Kael'thas. The rescue was successful and Illidan freed. Shortly after, Prince Kael'thas pledged his loyalty to Illidan in exhange for the ability to satiate his men's need for magic.

Illidan rationalized that if he were to stay in exile in Outland then he would need to scour the land and destroy all of Kil'jaeden's agents. The leader of the demons in Outland was a particularly powerful Pit Lord named Magtheridon. Before assualting Magtheridon's Black Citadel, Illidan and his forces deactivated the still functioning portals that had been created by Ner'zhul. After they were closed, Magtheridon had no way of calling for reinforcements. With that complete, Illidan and his army marched on the Black Citadel and destroyed the Master of Pain and the Mistress of Torment. After slaying these two poweful minions of Magtheridon the way was made clear to the Pit Lord. Again Illidan's forces advanced and they showed no mercy. After slaying Magtheridon, Illidan proclaimed himself master of all the creatures of Outland.

Immediately after destroying the enemy forces within the Black Citadel and huge dust storm approached and out of the sands came Kil'jaeden. Illidan immediately fell to his knees groveling and making escuses for his failure. Kil'jaeden, while not pleased with his pawn's shortcomings, gave him one more chance to kill Ner'zhul. With Kael'thas and Lady Vashj's aid, Illidan left Outland for the frozen lands of Northrend, home of the Icecrown Glacier and the Frozen Throne.

Once at the base of the Glacier, Illidan and his troops fortified their postion. They then attempted to open the gates to the Frozen Throne by activating the four obelesks. However it was during this time that Artha's forces arrived to stop him. Had Illidan's forces been able to open the gates themselves then they would have had a clear shot to Ner'zhul. However Arthas and his forces beat them to it and then engaged Illidan in one-on-one combat. Despite Illidan's considerable power, Arthas had just been rejuvenated by the Lich King and had tremendous amounts of energy flowing through him. Thus, Illidan was defeated by Arthas at the base of Icecrown Glacier. As Arthas made his way up the Frozen Throne, Illidan, still alive, slipped into the darkness and escaped back to Outland.
